The Disk Space utility helps you calculate real-world formatted storage capacities and plan disk arrays. It resolves the common discrepancy between manufacturer-advertised decimal storage sizes and binary sizes reported by operating systems.
Hardware manufacturers calculate disk size using the decimal system: 1 Kilobyte = 1,000 bytes, 1 Megabyte = 1,000,000 bytes, and 1 Gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes.
However, operating systems (such as Windows) read space using binary measurements (powers of 2): 1 Kibibyte (KiB) = 1,024 bytes, 1 Mebibyte (MiB) = 1,048,576 bytes, and 1 Gibibyte (GiB) = 1,073,741,824 bytes.

Operating systems reserve a portion of the drive for the file system (NTFS, APFS, or EXT4) metadata, partition tables, and sometimes paging files or hibernation files. This 'overhead' is necessary for the drive to function.
A completely full disk can cause system instability, applications to crash (as they can't write temporary files), and significantly slowed performance. In extreme cases, the OS may fail to boot.
In most modern OSs, deleting a file moves it to a 'Trash' or 'Recycle Bin' which still occupies space. You must empty the bin to permanently release the storage blocks.
GB (Gigabyte) is a decimal unit (10^9 bytes), while GiB (Gibibyte) is a binary unit (2^30 bytes). GiB is larger, which is why a drive's capacity number appears smaller when measured in binary.
